How to Make a Manicure Last Longer

To make a manicure last longer, protect it from the things that wear it down fastest: water and cleaning products, using your nails as tools, and picking at the edges. At Nailed It Spa in Fresno, the habits below apply whichever manicure you choose.

How to make a manicure last longer between visits

  • Wear gloves when you clean or wash dishes. Hot water and cleaning products usually wear on polish.
  • Open cans, lift tabs and pick up small things with your fingertip pads, not the nail edge.
  • Moisturise your hands and the skin around your nails regularly.
  • Leave edges alone, even when one catches. Picking and peeling are the usual way a manicure ends early.

How long does a manicure usually last?

Regular polish usually lasts about one to two weeks, and gel polish often lasts two to three. Your own wear time depends on how fast your nails grow and how hard your hands work, so treat these as rough ranges, not a promise.

Growth is the other clock. As the nail grows, a gap shows at the cuticle, and many people book again when that gap starts to bother them.

Should you pick or peel a lifting edge?

No. Peeling polish or an enhancement can damage the natural nail underneath, and a torn edge often lifts further. Leave the spot alone and mention it when you book, so the salon can look at it in person.

Removal is the same story. Come back to the salon to have your polish or enhancement taken off instead of working it off at home. If a nail hurts, or the skin around it is red or swollen, ask a doctor and tell the salon when you book.

Does the type of manicure change how you look after it?

The daily habits stay the same. What changes is what happens at the visit.

Signature Mani includes nail cutting, shaping and a lotion massage. Super Silky Manicure includes an exfoliating scrub, a mud mask or paraffin wax, and a massage. Both can be finished with regular polish or gel.

To compare every manicure by time, price and what is included, see manicures at Nailed It Spa. For a wider look at the options, the guide to types of manicures explains how they differ. When you are ready for a fresh set, book your visit.
