First-Time Acrylic Nails: What to Know

First-time acrylic nails start with an Acrylic Full Set, a new set of acrylic extensions built on your own nails in the length and shape you choose. At Nailed It Spa in Fresno it costs $50 and takes 60 minutes. Decide on a length and shape before you book, and bring a photo if you have one.

What is the difference between an acrylic full set and a fill?

A full set is the first appointment: new acrylic nails, made from scratch. A fill is the upkeep appointment that comes later, once your own nails have grown and left a gap near the cuticle.

A fill tops up that gap on the set you already wear, so it keeps the set going without starting over. It is shorter and costs less, which is why many people who wear acrylic return for fills every two to three weeks instead of booking a new set each time. If a set has lifted badly or broken, or you want a very different length, a new set can make more sense than a fill. Ask the technician which one fits.

Prices are cash prices. Card payments add 2.5%. For a closer look at the first two, read Full Set vs Fill: When Do You Need Each?

How do you choose a length and shape for your first set?

Pick a length you can use comfortably through the day. Acrylic usually feels harder and more rigid than soft gel, so think about how that firmer feel fits the way you use your hands.

Length changes how a set fits into ordinary tasks such as typing, cooking or opening containers. A shorter extension can feel easier to manage at first, while a longer shape takes more adjustment. Bring a reference photo and point out the outline you like, not only the color or decoration. If you are unsure, tell the technician what you do most often and settle on a practical starting length together.

What should you tell the salon when you book?

Say whether you already wear acrylic or another enhancement. Acrylic Full Set, Acrylic Fill and Take Off Acrylic are separate services, so this tells the salon which appointment fits what is on your nails now.

If you have a health question about your nails or skin, such as pain, an allergy, a medication or pregnancy, ask your doctor first and tell the salon when you book.

How long does a first acrylic appointment take?

Plan on about an hour. The Acrylic Full Set is booked for 60 minutes. Leave room to explain the look you want and to check that the starting shape feels right.

How do you care for a new acrylic set?

Use your fingertips for everyday tasks instead of treating the nails as tools, and wear gloves when you clean. If an edge catches or lifts, do not pick or peel it away, because that can hurt the natural nail underneath. Ask the salon about it instead.

Your own nails keep growing, so a gap shows near the cuticle after a couple of weeks. That is the point where many people book an Acrylic Fill. If a nail ever hurts or looks wrong, see a doctor.

When is removal the better appointment?

Choose Take Off Acrylic when you want an existing set taken off, whether you are changing to another service or finishing with acrylic. Removal is booked as its own service, and a new set can follow once the old product is off. Pulling acrylic off at home is a common way to damage the natural nail, so leave removal to the salon.
