A full set is a new set of nail extensions, such as acrylic, applied over your natural nails. A manicure is care and polish on the nails you already have, so manicure vs full set is a question of length. At Nailed It Spa in Fresno, an Acrylic Full Set costs $50 and takes 60 minutes. A 30-minute Signature Mani costs $23 and Gel X costs $60.
What is the difference between a manicure and a full set?
A manicure cares for your own nails and finishes them. A full set adds extensions, so you leave with a different length and shape than you arrived with.
Signature Mani is the shortest manicure, and our guide to types of manicures covers the rest of the manicures menu. Gel Builder sits between a manicure and a full set.
A full set is built from scratch. In general, an acrylic full set adds length with acrylic shaped over tips, and Gel X uses a full-cover soft gel tip sized to each nail. Both are listed at 60 minutes. Gel X usually feels lighter and more flexible, while acrylic usually feels harder and more rigid.
Which services fall between a manicure and a full set?
Five services cover the range from your own nails to a full set, and two fills keep a set going afterwards.
| Service | Time | Price | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signature Mani | 30 minutes | $23, with gel $23 + $15 | You want a short visit and your own length |
| Gel Builder | 60 minutes | $55 | You want a structured overlay on your own nails, or you are growing them out |
| Dip Powder | 60 minutes | $50 | You want color built in layers and a firm finish on your own nails |
| Gel X | 60 minutes | $60 | You want added length that feels lighter |
| Acrylic Full Set | 60 minutes | $50 | You want added length and a firmer feel |
| Acrylic Fill | 45 minutes | $40 | Your acrylic set has grown out |
| Gel X Fill | 45 minutes | $45 | Your Gel X set is around three weeks old |
Prices are cash prices. Card payments add 2.5%, and prices may vary with nail length and design complexity.
Gel manicure vs full set: how do they compare?
A gel manicure puts gel on your natural nail length, and a full set changes that length. Signature Mani costs $23 for 30 minutes, and adding gel is $23 + $15. Gel polish commonly lasts two to three weeks.
Gel X is the soft gel extension, and our gel manicure vs Gel X guide compares the two. For a thicker gel over your own nails, Gel Builder is the service to look at.
Dip nails vs full set: what changes?
Dip Powder is a layered color coat on your own nails, while a full set changes your length. Colored powder goes over a prepared nail, then the surface is shaped and sealed, and it usually feels firm and smooth.
It costs $50 for 60 minutes, the same as an Acrylic Full Set, and our dip powder vs acrylic guide compares the two. If length is the reason you are comparing, choose between Gel X and acrylic, which our Gel X vs acrylic guide covers.
What happens after a full set?
A full set is followed by fills, which keep the set going without starting over. As your natural nail grows, a gap shows near the cuticle. Acrylic is usually filled every two to three weeks, and an Acrylic Fill costs $40 for 45 minutes. Gel X commonly lasts about three to four weeks, and a Gel X Fill, which costs $45 for 45 minutes, is for a set around three weeks old, so a fill comes at the early end of that range.
A fill is quicker and costs less than a new set. When a set has lifted badly or cracked, or you want a very different length, a new set may make more sense. Our guide to acrylic full set vs fill explains how to tell. When you are done with acrylic, have it taken off at the salon with Take Off Acrylic, which costs $20 for 25 minutes.
Manicure vs full set: how do you choose?
Choose a manicure when you want to keep your own length. Signature Mani keeps the visit short, and Gel Builder or Dip Powder gives your own nails a structured overlay or a layered color coat.
Choose a full set when length or a new shape is the point. Acrylic suits long nails and bold shapes, and Gel X suits people who want length that feels lighter. A fill appointment every few weeks is part of wearing either one, so think about that schedule before you book.
If you are unsure, bring a photo of the length and shape you want and mention it when you book your appointment.
