Almond vs coffin nails comes down to the tip. Almond nails narrow to a soft, rounded point, while coffin nails narrow to a flat, squared-off end. At Nailed It Spa in Fresno, Gel X and Acrylic Full Set can both be shaped almond, coffin or square.

Neither shape is better than the other. It is a matter of the outline you like to look at and the length you are comfortable wearing.

What do almond, coffin and square nails look like?

Almond, coffin and square are three outlines for the same nail, and the difference sits at the tip.

  • Square has straight sides and a flat end with defined corners.
  • Almond has sides that curve inward from the base and meet in a rounded point, like the nut it is named after.
  • Coffin tapers inward like almond, but the end is cut flat, so the tip is narrower than square and wider than almond.

Coffin is sometimes called ballerina. Almond has the softest outline of the three, and square has the most angular.

Is nail shape the same as nail length?

No. Length is how far the nail extends past your fingertip, and shape is the outline of the tip. Any of the three shapes can be done at different lengths.

For how length and shape work together on a set, read choosing acrylic nail length and shape.

Length does change how a shape reads, though. Almond and coffin are often shown on longer nails, where the taper has room to show.

On a short nail, a coffin looks close to a square with slightly narrowed sides, and an almond looks like a gentle rounded oval. If you want a short almond vs coffin comparison to be obvious, bring a photo at the length you plan to wear.

Which services can be shaped almond, coffin or square?

Gel X comes in almond, coffin or square shapes, from short to long. An Acrylic Full Set can be shaped from short square to long coffin or almond. Both appointments take about an hour, and French Tip can be added on top of either one.

Prices are cash prices, card payments add 2.5%, and prices may vary with nail length and design complexity. For how the two sets differ in feel, read Gel X vs acrylic.

What shape can you get on natural nails?

On natural nails, shape depends on the length you already have. A short natural nail has little free edge to taper, so an almond or coffin outline has less room to show. That is one reason people choose extensions when they want those shapes.

A manicure such as Signature Mani includes nail cutting, shaping and a lotion massage, so the outline is worked out at the table with your own length.

How does a French tip look on each shape?

French Tip adds a classic white tip to another compatible service, and the shape of the nail decides how that white line sits. It costs $8 and takes 15 minutes, and it is commonly paired with Gel X or an Acrylic Full Set.

  • On square nails, the white band usually runs straight across the flat end.
  • On almond nails, the white follows the curve and narrows toward the point.
  • On coffin nails, the white usually sits across the flat tip, with the sides sloping in to meet it.

The same photo can look different on your hands, because nail width and length change the proportions. Point out which part of the tip design you like most when you book.

Almond vs coffin nails: how do you choose?

Choose by the outline you enjoy and the length that suits your day. If you type a lot, cook, or use your hands for other everyday tasks, a shorter set in either shape is usually easier to get used to. Longer sets tend to take a little time to adjust to.

Look at your saved photos for what they have in common. If most show a rounded point, almond is a good place to start. If they show a flat tip with sloping sides, look at coffin, and if the sides stay straight, square may be the one.

When you are ready, book an appointment and bring one or two photos showing the shape and length you want.
